Madrid Day 3 - Who Cazar? Alcazar!
Beautiful Segovia. I had a farm in Segovia....this is the type of place that makes me want to slap on a baret and write beautiful prose about fruit and naked bodies. Founded by Celts in the waaaay back, it was renamed Segovia (meaning fortress) by the Romans who owned everything it seems. This quaint city is a mix of so many different cultures, like something right out of a fairy tale. It has the rolling green hills of Ireland, the wood and stucco facades of Bavaria, the red tile roofs of Spain, the Dickensian cobblestone streets of England and the storybook castles of France. The one thing this place is though is C to the U.T.E.!
!
Alcazar (or castle) of Segovia was the home of many lines of royalty of the centuries. It's most famous residents were King Ferdinand and Queen Elizabeth of Spain. Trust me, I've seen plenty of castles...like almost every day, but this stopped me dead in my tracks. Walt Disney visted here in his travels and was so inspired by its beauty that he modeled Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland after it.
!
It's not easy bein' green...Or hanging over a mossy embankment while someone takes your picture.
!
This is the very spot that Christopher Columbus asked, and received permission, for funding of his trip to the new world. This is the same view that he would have had as he asked King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella for funding. If America as we know it was consumated on the shores of Virginia, then this is the high school dance where the romance began and we got to second base!
!
We ate lunch at Meson de Candido, a restaurant so exclusive that unless you are a resident, you don't get in. We got special access not only to the restaurant but to it's signature dish, the roasted suckling pig which was presided over by Senor Candido himself who preceded to cut it with a plate and then smashed it against the floor. I was at a loss for words.
!
The acqueduct was built by the Romans in 5 A.D. and is still used by the people of Segovia to this day.
!
The adventurers at the end of their trip back through time and Spain's rich cultural history and heritage. Next stop, the modern sassy pants-ness of Barcelona!
